- Title
Elusive Evidentials in Translation: An Analysis of One Folklore Text.
- Authors
Makartsev, Maksim M.
- Abstract
The article discusses evidentials in Bulgarian folklore narrative, focusing on semiotic rules. The author examines a number of translations of the folk ballad "The Dead Brother's Song," including modern Bulgarian translations, a translation by Sapkarev, and the original Albanian version. The author explores both direct and indirect evidentials, concluding that changes between the two occur at junctures of plot. He also addresses foregrounding, backgrounding, and the work of historian Grace Fielder.
