- Abstract
During the last 15 years, the development of paleoethnobotany in the circum-Caribbean region has shown that some populations traditionally considered as "fishermen-gatherers", actually managed a diverse set of botanical species, including domesticates. These results are largely due to the fact that the paleo-dietary studies have incorporated the identification of microbotanical remains, such as starches in artifacts, teeth, and sediments found in archaeological sites. In this paper we report for first time for Cuba, the presence of starch granules of Capsicum sp. (chili pepper) and Manihot esculenta (cassava) in residues extracted from two drilled lithic discs associated to the lowlevel food producer's sites of Caney del Castillo in Camagüey, and Playa del Mango in Río Cauto, Granma. A total of 74 starch grains were observed. In addition to cassava and chili pepper, starches of maize (Zea mays), possibly sweet potato (Ipomoea sp.), and representatives of the Fabaceae and possible Zamiaceae families, were identified.
