- Abstract
This review presents the methods of fighting against silverleaf nightshade that have been employed in Morocco. Concerning competing crop methods, the use of a weed-choking crop like alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) at the beginning of rotation can largely reduce the infestation of this weed because it cuts out competition and has an allelopathic effect on silverleaf nightshade. There are three mechanical methods that have demonstrated their effectiveness: deep plowing with a three disc plow, the sweep (a tool with a width of 2. 5 m made up of three V blades) and the small scythe (manual tool which cuts the plant on the level of the ground). Deep plowing (> 30 cm) and the sweep are recommended at the beginning of summer and following crop harvesting. Use of the small scythe, during 2 to 3 times each year at the flowering stage in various biotopes, allows the progressive weakening of the weed in the short term. Alfalfa planting, deep plowing and the sweep are advised for the infestations medium to high. Moreover, mechanical interventions combined with herbicides (glyphosate, sulfosate, aminotriazole and phytohormones) often are highly effective. The combination of these methods is highly desirable for the large surfaces where the infestation is average to strong.
