- Title
Incest Disguised: Ottonian Influence at Gandersheim and Hrotsvit's Abraham.
- Authors
Evitt, Regula Meyer
- Abstract
The author focuses on the play "Fall and Redemption of Mary," or "Abraham," by Hrotsvit of Gandersheim. The author expands the view of literal incest to spiritual or theo-political incest, examining the play as one that developed from the politics of incest at the Ottonian court and Gandesheim, Germany in the 10th century. An overview of marriage and incest among the Ottonian nobility is offered, along with a discussion of religious houses for women as a solution to the problem. A reading of the play in light of these issues is presented.
