- Abstract
The in vivo multiplication of baculovirus Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SfMNPV) in the specific host Spodoptera frugiperda features the issue of cannibalism of the pest species, with increase in costs and reduction of the final production. Current paper aims at improving the in vivo production method of SfMNPV based on the density of caterpillars and in the period of virus multiplication. Four-day old caterpillars of S. frugiperda were inoculated by virus suspension of isolate 6 (1 x 108 OB.mL-1) of SfMNPV in artificial diet. Caterpillars were kept at 31ºC in two densities (50 and 100 caterpillars/tray) and five periods for virus multiplication (48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 hours). After each period, the caterpillars of the two densities were frozen, weighed and ground to quantify occlusion bodies and the calculation of production parameters. Based on evaluated parameters, densities 50 and 100 caterpillars/tray and 96-h period are adequate for the improvement of in vivo production of isolate 6 of SfMNPV in caterpillars of S. frugiperda.
