- Abstract
Lavender is a medicinal herb widely used in folk medicine, especially in the northeastern region of Brazil. Its growth may be limited by excess of salt in irrigation water. Alternatives may lessen the effects. Osmotic conditioning of the seeds is evaluated with regard to growth and fluorescence of chlorophyll a in M. suaveolens plants under saline stress. Statistical design consisted of randomized blocks within an incomplete 5x5 factorial scheme, with five levels of electric conductivity of irrigation water (0.5; 1.45; 5.00; 8.55; 10.0 dS m-1) and five osmotic capacities (0.0; -0.15; -0.50; -0.85; -1.0 MPa), with four replications made up of two plants, totaling nine combinations generated by matrix of Central Composite Box. Growth characteristics and fluorescence parameters of chlorophyll a were evaluated on the 45th day after the start of saline water application. Data underwent normality tests (Shapiro-Wilk) and variance homogeneity (Bartlett) tests. Data were then submitted to variance analysis by test F; in cases of significant, polynomial regression analysis was undertaken. Growth characteristics were severely affected by increase in salinity of the irrigation water. Salinity above 3.9 dS m-1 decreases all fluorescence parameters of chlorophyll a in wild lavender plants. Osmo-conditioning of seeds with polyethylenoglicol reduces the negative effects of salinity in leaf emission. Seed conditioning with PEG stimulates the activity of chlorophyll a fluorescence index.
