- Abstract
The article analyzes the dramatic work "Los menestrales" by Cándido María Trigueros, written in 1784, and its representation of social boundaries and conflicts motivated by individuals trying to ascend in the social hierarchy in Spain during the Ancient Regime. It is emphasized that the differences between the noble class and the bourgeoisie were not so profound, as both participated in commercial activities and shared bourgeois values. The concept of "bordering" is used to describe the production and reproduction of boundaries in response to changing relationships between nation, state, and territory. Enlightened authorities and playwrights used theater as an educational space to regulate and mark the limits of social identities.
