- Abstract
Çukurova region where had been the land of the Cilicia Armenian Kingdom since the 11th century subordinated to the Ramazanoğulları Principality in the 14th century and then by the year 1517, after Yavuz Sultan Selim's Egypt campaign, annexed to Ottoman land. Particularly during the Ramazanoğulları and Ottoman period, with intensive Turkmen nomads' migrations towards the region, demographic changes occurred in the region. In the 16th century Armenians of the region settled down in downtowns and castle cities. After the middle of this century, with migrations to other districts, Armenian population decreased against the Muslim population. Contrary to its historical background Çukurova region does not seem to have an intensive Armenian population in the 16th century. In this article, population and settlement of Armenians of Çukurova province in the 16th century were studied based on Ottoman Tahrir registers. Within this context, both Armenian and Muslim taxpayers' population changes by years in Adana, Tarsus, Sis and Üzeyr sanjaks of Çukurova province were examined comprehensively and comparatively.
