- Abstract
"The Opportunity Trap: High‐Skilled Workers, Indian Families and the Failures of the Dependent Visa Program" by Pallavi Banerjee is a book that examines the experiences of Indian couples who joined their spouses on dependent visas in the United States. Through interviews with 55 couples, Banerjee explores the challenges faced by dependent visa holders and the ways in which the visa regime impacts their lives. The book delves into issues of class, caste, gender, and identity, shedding light on the reification, exploitation, and resistance experienced by these immigrants. While the book provides valuable insights into the experiences of dependent visa holders, it lacks analysis of the effects of caste and class positions of Indian migrants in the US and their perception of loss of agency.
