The article focuses on General Joaquim José Machado of Mozambique, along with Machado's role in the construction of the railway between Lourenço Marques and Pretoria. Topics include the history about the economic relationship between Transvaal, South Africa and Mozambique, the effort of Machado to survey and lead the construction of the railway section lines in the Mozambique, and the inauguration of the railway led by former South African President Paul Kruger on November 2, 1894.a
