- Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes dementia. It is due to a cerebral dysfunction, initially affecting the hippocampal formation and the short-term memory center, with disturbance of multiple cognitive and motor functions. The objective of this study was to analyze the gait kinematics of patients with AD, identifying the presence of cognitive damage through tests such as Mini-Mental State Examination and Clinical Demential Rating. It consisted of descriptive research with a cross-sectional design. A control group (GC) composed of 10 elderly individuals without cognitive alterations and an Alzheimer (GA) group composed of 8 elderly people with dementia were analyzed. The data collection was performed through the VICON System, where markers were fixed in certain anatomical points of the lower limbs. With the results obtained in this study, it can be observed that GA individuals presented significantly lower values when compared to CG in the rate (p = 0.006), velocity (p = 0.001), step (p = 0.01), and stride length (P = 0.005). Therefore, it can be concluded that individuals with Alzheimer's disease, in addition to cognitive loss, present alterations in the spatiotemporal variables studied, and that this motor loss significantly interferes with gait kinematics.
