- Title
"A Fallacious Concept": Invertible Counterpoint at the Twelfth within the Ursatz.
- Authors
FRANCK, PETER
- Abstract
Schenker branded invertible counterpoint at the twelfth as a "fallacious concept" in Derfreie Satz, yet he also revered music employing this contrapuntal device. In an effort to reconcile his paradoxical views, this essay investigates invertible counterpoint at the twelfth and its role within compositional practice and tonal theory. As regards compositional practice, I endeavor to explain ways in which invertible counterpoint at the twelfth functions within a number of J. S. Bach's works, both fugal and non-fugal. As to tonal theory, I endeavor to reconcile invertible counterpoint at the twelfth with properties of Schenker's Ursatz.
