- Abstract
The upward mobility of Portuguese New Christians in Castile during the Modern Age has traditionally been glossed over by historiography. Divided in two sections, this paper focuses on this subject for a specific geographical area, Andalusia, due to the continued presence of lusitanian judeoconversos there. In order to analyze its importance, we divided the first in four parts according to each of its four kingdoms: Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada y Jaén. Further into the analysis the second part delves into the most notorious families who achieved that goal, through bibliographical research and archive references, not only the ones from the inquisitorial registers but also a range of local sources. As we try to prove in our approach, despite the hindrance suffered by this minority because of the rest of the Old Christian Society, portuguese conversos were able to access andalusian cabildos municipales [old spanish for town councils] through economic power, nobiliary protection and other means. Although the permanent menace of the Holy Office made some of them fail their attemp, others could even recover from the inquisitorial prosecution erasing the stains of their past.
