- Abstract
The cerebral babesiosis induces neurological signs and is an important cause of death in cattle. This work describes an outbreak of natural infection by Babesia bovis in cattle in the Western Frontier of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. A flock with 159 cattle, 13 animals showed neurological clinical signs and died. Three of these animals were necropsied and showed pale mucous membranes, dark-red kidneys, hemoglobinuria, splenomegaly and brain with pink-cherry discoloring. Histologically, may be seen blood congestion and perivascular edema in the nervous system, in addition to large sequestration of erythrocytes in capillaries of de gray matter, caused by organisms with morphology compatible with B. bovis.
