- Abstract
In 1996 the Swedish government decided to create a new museum in the city of Gothenburg. This museum would be pan of a new authority called the National Museums of World Culture (Statens Museer för världskultur). This new organization should contain all the national museums with non- European collections, and the Provincial Museum of Ethnography in Gothenburg was also included in the project. In 1999 the Museum of Ethnography moved to the national management, and since then a great ideological paradigm shift began in the administration of the museum. A new house was built for exhibitions and the Museum of World Culture (Viirldskulturmuseet) opened its doors to the public in December 2004. Participating in this process, it was possible to observe how this change influenced the management of collections, and how these began to represent something new in the Swedish environment. These collections, which for many years had been viewed as representatives of people outside Sweden, became in the political discourse a possible tool for the integration of different nationalities living today in Sweden. During their time in Sweden, the collections have been representutive of many ideas, and have been contextualized in different discourses. These collections have been in Gothenburg in some cases more than 100 years: some of tbem arrived as souvenirs of journeys to exotic lands, and now they have become tools for a better living in the city. In this paper, a synthetic history; of the collections in their stay in Gothenburg will be presented.
