- Abstract
Although knowledge-sharing among team members in an organisation can enhance the organisation’s competitive advantage, individuals are sometimes reluctant to share their knowledge. By effectively managing a team environment in which team members can feel psychologically safe to express their opinions and ideas, knowledge-sharing among these team members can be improved. In this article, these concepts are hereafter referred to as ‘team psychological safety’ and ‘intra-team knowledge-sharing behaviour’. The relationship between team psychological safety and intra-team knowledge-sharing behaviour has not been adequately explored in a multicultural context. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the influence of team psychological safety on the intrateam knowledge-sharing behaviour of individual members of knowledge-intensive teams in South African organisations. Through a positivistic research paradigm, data were collected from 384 respondents who participated in knowledge-intensive teams. Structural equation modelling was used to assess the relationship between the variables. The results revealed a statistically positive relationship between team psychological safety and intrateam knowledge-sharing behaviour. Team leaders could increase intra-team knowledge-sharing behaviour by encouraging team psychological safety through practical recommendations proposed by this study.
