- Abstract
The article presents a study on the role of motivation in treatment of substance used disorders (SUD), focusing on motivation and co-occurring psychological disorder (COD) symptoms as predictors of SUD treatment retention. The effect of COD on effectiveness of motivation in SUD treatment is noted. It is suggested that a focus on motivation in the beginning of SUD treatment, rather than direct treatment of mental illness or SUD, leads to higher rates of treatment retention and completion.
