- Abstract
The Khoe-San group of southern Africa has attracted the attention of anthropologists for some time due to their unique culture and physique. The manner in which the skeletons under investigation were collected during the late 1800s and early 1900s has also contributed to the special interest that Khoe-San skeletal collections have received during the past few years. This study focuses on two specific Khoe-San skeletal collections housed in Europe: the Rudolf Pöch skeletal collection in Vienna, Austria, and the skeletons in the Musde de l'Homme, Paris, France. These two collections are discussed in terms of scientific value, general content and demographic data, as well as the possible origin of the remains. Preliminary results on health status suggest that the Khoe-San population of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was under much stress and subjected to severe marginalisation. Further research is needed to confirm uncertainties regarding this group's health and well-being during the given time period. It is important to keep in mind that political and ethical issues often play a role in the use of such skeletal material for research, and that repatriation is currently a major issue for the fate of Khoe-San skeletal material housed in Europe.
