PRIMUTH, RICHARD S.
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the depiction of vampires in literature, theater, and film with a focus on parallels between the depiction of vampires and homosexuals. Topics discussed include the possibility that the character of Dracula, created by homosexual Irish novelist Bram Stoker, was gay, the use of vampires in film as negative metaphors for homosexuals from the 1940s to the late 1960s, and the depictions of vampires in the era of gay liberation that followed the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
