- Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the profile of the family caregiver and to learn about their perceptions regarding the Intensive Care Unit (UTI). This is a qualitative study realized between January and February, 2009, with the relatives of patients hospitalized in the UTI. The data was gathered through semi-structured interviews, and analyzed by content analysis. The study illustrated that 57% of the relatives were males, between 21 and 30 years old (29%), over 51 years old (29%); 36% completed high school; 79% Catholics; 29% housewives; and 36% with a family income of minimum wage. In 21% of the cases the family member was a son or daughter. In terms of their feelings toward the UTI, some of the patients' relatives were confident and positive, while others felt sad and afraid. The conclusion of the study states that the health team should understand the social context of the family, for the individual is highly influenced by these relationships.
