- Abstract
This article is study of Huang Zunxian (1848-1905), a Chinese poet, thinker, and reformer. There is an abundance of information on Huang Zunxian from books, biographies, and chronicles. The author has found over 73 types of materials on Huang Zunxian at the Harvard-Yenching Library. Yet there are still important biographical details missing. This article fills this gap. The first section of the article clarifies the dates and responsibilities of his posting with the Beiyang Navy. The second discusses an archival document from China’s Number One Historical Archives that indicates his departure from Tianjin to have an audience with the Guangxu emperor in Beijing. The third examines the origin of his appointment as China’s ambassador to Japan. The fourth and last is the Guangxu Emperor’s reaction to his post in Japan.
