- Authors

- Abstract
The article explores the historical setting of the poem “Yinshan dao” (Yin Mountain Route), by Yuan Zhen. The poem details the economic crisis in China caused by the shortage of silk, a common form of currency during China's Tang dynasty before the wide-spread introduction of coinage. It notes that historiography of the period blames the shortage of silk on the trade of horses with the Uighurs. The poem is part of the genre of poems known as the New Music Bureau poems. Topics include social criticism, governance, and political commentary in literature.
