- Abstract
The article highlights some issues related to construction of dams on the Mackenzie River, known as "Deh Cho" by Dene aboriginal for hydroelectricity in North West Territories. The Northwest Territories Power Corporation engineers had estimated that this $26-billion megaproject could produce a total of 11,000 megawatts, bringing in over $600 million a year in revenues. However, simple Geographic Information Systems mapping technology shows flooding that would happen if megadam plans by Premier Stephen Kakfwi and cabinet minister Joe Handley of the Northwest Territories went ahead on the Mackenzie River. The dams are said to flood many culturally and ecologically significant sites. INSET: Water for Diamonds.
