- Abstract
Since the second half of the 19th century boulders of large size (up to 30-120 cm diameter) and of exotic rock quality (arriving from different geological environments at great distances from their site of occurrence) have been recovered from Pleistocene gravel deposits in various locations: along the Danube River between Győr and Délegyháza and from alluvial fans in the northern, western and southeastern foreland of the Matra Mountains and from alluvial fans of the Sajó and Hernád Rivers as well as probably of the Maros River. Several explanations were put forward for their origin: ice rafting in river ice or till in bed ice or river load. The distribution of boulders and their deposition pattern point to fluvial origin but it is also possible that their movement started with ice rafting. The paper presents data from literature along with author's own observations.
