An essay is presented that examines the role of animals in liberal education during the Victorian era and discusses the book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," by Lewis Carroll. Topics covered include the impact of animal subjectivity on the goals of liberal education, development and changes in mid-Victorian liberalism, the association between animal subjectivity and education, democracy and liberalism, and comparisons of the depiction of animals in several children's books.
