- Authors
HURST, C. T.
- Abstract
The article presents information on a Ute rock shelter located at the base of a cliff overlooking the Sheep Creek in Saguache County, Colorado. First discovered by Henrietta Boyd, the cave yielded a variety of surface artifacts including a scraper, a piece of turquoise, a based point, several stemmed points, flakes and a drill blade. The cave was later excavated by the Saguache and Rio Grande Chapters of the Colorado Archaeological Society. The dimensions of the cave are given and the author notes that the ceiling had traces of smoke. The cave was most likely a hunting outpost for the Utes given the location's valuable outlook. Additional evidence suggests that trade with Pueblo cultures may have taken place with the cave's inhabitants.
