Against the Boards: Reflecting on My Youth.

- Abstract
The article presents reflections on the life of a youth. I grew up with an older sister who, as I became aware of existence at the age of four or so, was a teenager who had absolute control of the television and radio in our house. While others learned to skate and shoot, I learned to dream and create. As my peers began to indulge in the burgeoning colossus that was to become Nintendo, my ears and eyes were kept firmly on the pulse of what was yet to come. Even as the power of peer pressure began to overwhelm, the natural born freak in me drove me to create my own path. My desire to be myself was one of the keys to my successful recovery from my vices and from the very streets that threatened to swallow me whole. Knowledge became my plateau. Words became my drug. I used the power of my culture and the wisdom of many influential people to help me discover my destiny. I read the work of Larry Brendtro, Martin Brokenleg, and Steve Van Bockern. For months, a copy of Reclaiming Youth at Risk never left my side.
