- Abstract
An essay is presented on the cinematic representations of the trial and death of Saint Joan of Arc by Carl Dreyer's 1928 film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" and Robert Bresson's 1961 film "The Trial of Joan of Arc." Topics discussed include Bresson's attempt to re-envision the relationship between faith and knowledge, the directors' differing approaches to faith, and the production of meaning in Bresson's film. Also mentioned are hermeneutic problems confronting the viewers of Bresson's film.
