- Title
Equivalence and noninferiority in anaesthesia research.
- Authors
Myles, P. S.
- Abstract
The author discusses the importance of the concepts of equivalence and noninferiority in anesthesia research. He contends that clinicians may not need to know if a new treatment is superior, only that it be equivalent or noninferior to an existing treatment. The importance of determining what difference between groups in clinical trials could be considered trivial or of no clinical importance is examined. If a clinical trial is inconclusive, the author states that the groups cannot be interpreted as equivalent.
