- Abstract
The article discusses the relationships among crime, fear of crime, and active living, drawing on the fields of environmental criminology and urban planning. People are less likely to lead active lives in areas where they do not feel safe. Fear of crime can be influenced by psychological factors. This fear can vary by sociodemographic characteristics. Physical spaces that are associated with a fear of crime are enclosed spaces and anonymous and deserted open spaces. Ways to reduce fear and crime, including criminal justice systems and problem-oriented policing, are discussed.
