- Abstract
In Slovenia there is little information about the attitude of adolescents towards stereotypes about the elderly. We have compiled a questionnaire about this to which 188 students between the ages of 15 and 19 answered. We got four groups of answers that define the adolescent’s attitude to negative stereotypes of the elderly, namely: mood, traditionalism, physical fragility, attitude to technology, and two groups of answers that define the adolescent’s attitude to positive stereotypes of the elderly, namely: wisdom and sociability. We found that in adolescents, stereotyping can be related to their age, gender, location of permanent residence and whether they live in a permanent household with an elderly person. Due to the too small and therefore non-representative sample of the study population, the findings of the research can be generalized to the population of students of the two secondary schools that participated in the research, but only conditionally to the population of Slovenian adolescents. Nevertheless, formal and informal educational programs for young people should include content about age and ageing, in which elderly with a positive view of ageing would actively participate. This paper was written in the hope that it will take a small step forward in informing population about the presence of adolescents’ attitude towards stereotypes about the elderly and will stimulate further research in this area.
