- Abstract
Objective: Alcohol craving is described as a strong urge to drink alcohol. Personality traits are believed to have an important role for individual differences related with alcohol craving. The aim of this study was to determine relationship of Cloninger's personality dimensions with alcohol craving in male alcohol dependent inpatients. Method: The study was conducted with hospitalized patients between July 2007 and February 2008 at Bakirkoy State Hospital for Mental Health and Neurological Disorders, AMATEM (Alcohol and Drug Research, Treatment and Education Center) in Istanbul. One hundred and three inpatients diagnosed as having alcohol dependence were included in the study. They were given sociodemographic form, PENN Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), anxiety and depression subscales of the Symptom Checklist-Revised (SCL-90-R) and Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST). Results: PACS total score showed positive correlation with Cloninger's personality dimension of novelty seeking, whereas negative correlations were found with directedness and cooperativeness. PACS also showed positive correlation with anxiety, depression, and MAST scores. All these correlations were mild in degree (r<0.50). In linear regression model novelty seeking and depression predicted craving scores (F=8.89, df=1,101, R2=0.13). When subscales of TCI were included in the linear regression model as independent variables instead of the personality dimensions, lower scores from "congruent second nature" subscale was the only predictor of craving (F=17.40, df=1,101, R2=0.14). Discussion: Results which were obtained in this study suggests that the NS, together with negative affect, are important personality dimensions related with craving in male alcohol dependent inpatients. Low "congruent second nature," in other words "bad habits" seems to be most important personality trait related with craving severity.
