- Abstract
Objective: The main goal of this study was to compare the hemodialysis group and controls in terms of subjective sleep quality and to investigate the predictors of the sleep quality of the hemodialysis patients. Method: The sample of the study consisted of 49 hemodialysis patients and a control group of 35 persons (20 F, 15 M). Participants were administered SF-36 Quality of Life Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and a questtionnaire for demografic information. Results: The results of the study indicates that PSQI scores of the hemodialysis group, is significantly higher than controls. The "bad sleepers" who are below the cut off score, are 78%. The main predictor of the sleep quality is the physical dimension of (PD) SF-36 Quality of life scale. Also there is a negative correlation among PSQI and PD scores. The scores of SF -36 PD in hemodialysis group is significantly lower than the control group. There is a negative correlation between BDI scores and SF- 36 (PD) as well as a positive correlation with PSQI in hemodialysis group. A further investigation reveals that among "good " and "bad" sleepers, who are below and above the PSQI cut-off score, there is a differentiation in terms of BDI and PD scores. Mainly, depression scores are higher and PD scores are lower in bad sleeping group. Discussion: This study emphasizes the effect of physical dimension of quality of life (PD) on the sleep quality scores of hemodialysis patients and the importance of controlling the depression factor.
