- Title
Investigations of White Etching Crack (WEC) Formation under Rolling Contact Fatigue.
- Authors
Evans, Martin -H.; Richardson, Alex D.; Ling Wang; Wood, Robert J. K.
- Abstract
The article discusses a study based on white structure flaking (WSF) which occurs in wind turbine gearbox bearings, and is associated with microstructural alterations called white etching area (WEA) and white etching cracks. Topics discussed include tribological drivers for WSF like hydrogen release and diffusion into bearing steel, generation of hydrogen by decomposition of lubricants through catalytic reactions and tribochemical reactions of water, and sectioning direction of WECs.
