- Abstract
The article discusses the role of ramalin, a chemical compound from the Antarctic lichen Ramalina terebrata, as a therapeutic agent to modulate inflammation within atherosclerosis. Topics discussed include the role of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in inflammatory the initiation of atherosclerosis; the use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine of cell surface expression of adhesion molecules; and the effect of ramalin on cell viability in VSMCs.
