- Abstract
The conservation of the central areas, which concentrate historical buildings with cultural values, is necessary in order to preserve the integrity and identity of the cities. But it does not only involves physical rehabilitation, but also the introduction of new functionalities and activities compatible with the resources and current demands of each context. The present work exposes the criteria followed for the refunctionalization of four historical buildings in the cities of Havana and Quito, taking into account the architectural typologies, functions, technologies and materials. It addresses the type of intervention, the project strategies and the forms of articulations performed. This analysis allows a global view of the effectiveness of the interventions carried out.
