- Abstract
A series of uniaxial and multiaxial ratchetting experiments were conducted on nitrile butadiene rubber material (NBR). The effects of cyclic strain, stress and their histories on strain cyclic characteristics and ratchetting behaviour were studied respectively. Test results show that cyclic stabilisation of the stress–strain behaviour takes place under lower loading, but changed as the load increased under uniaxial ratchetting experiment. The ratchetting strain rate depends on loading conditions. Ratchetting strain and its rate rise with the increase of the axial stress and shear strain amplitude. In addition, loading history and loading sequence are found to have significant influence on ratchetting behaviour. The prior stress cycling with higher loading can restrain the ratchetting of subsequent stress cycling with lower loading. But the prior stress cycling with lower loading has little effect on the ratchetting of subsequent stress cycling with higher loading. Ratchetting behaviour is sensitive to the strain rate under multiaxial loading, and both ratchetting strain and its rate increase with decreasing shear strain rates. Creep behaviour plays an important role in the ratchetting strain and its influence on ratchetting behaviour can not be neglected.
