The article discusses the implications of the changing requirement for marine diesel engine oils in Europe. Topics discussed include the need for marine diesel engine oils to contain alkaline additives to counter the corrosive effects of acids such as sulphuric acid produced during combustion, limits on the emissions of sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, and the efforts of marine lubricant makers to develop oils for low-sulphur fuels.
