- Authors
Leja, Meg
- Abstract
The article examines two Carolingian texts written by members of the Frankish nobility in the early 840s, focusing on their discussions of masculinity. The works "Histories," by the lay nobleman Nithard and "Manual," by the lay noblewoman Dhuoda are examined and their descriptions and opinions concerning masculinity are explored. The disorder experienced in the lives of nobility, models of behavior, and duty are examined. Ideals of Carolingian knighthood, the male body, and gender relations are also explored. Particular notion is given to domination and self-control in discussions concerning masculinity during the Middle Ages.
