- Title
'Fra det ubevidste Sjæleliv': Ibsen's Existential Poetry.
- Authors
Durbach, Errol
- Abstract
The article considers the way Henrik Ibsen uses language to express the existential emptiness of his female characters. His women, Hedda Gabler among them, are incoherent in their attempts to communicate the intricacies of their emotional and philosophical states. The contemporary critic faces the same problems of vocabulary when attempting to discuss the "soul-life" of the characters, a problem made worse in translation. This indefiniteness means that there is no definitive version of Ibsen, and that his works continue to discomfit his audiences.
