- Abstract
The article presents information about an 18th century Spanish mission in Tahiti. Between 1772 and 1775, the Spanish crown sponsored three journeys to establish a Franciscan Mission on Tahiti. The second voyage arrived in Tahiti in November 1774 but returned to Peru in April 1775 after the death of its leader in January that year. The mission remained in Tahiti till November that year. However, the third voyage took missionaries and their companions back to Peru. This was done because friars felt threatened in Tahiti as there were no more Spanish soldiers to protect them. The mission that remained almost for a year on Tahiti comprised of four persons. They included two Franciscan Friars, a sailor and an interpreter.
