- Abstract
In this way, Mullen argues, realism's investment in the past does not simply affirm the rightness of modern society; it also opens a way for the books to consider "otherwise possibilities" (141). In I Novel Institutions: Anachronism, Irish Novels and Nineteenth-Century Realism i , Mary L. Mullen makes a similar argument about realism. Mullen's chapter on George Moore is perhaps the book's strongest, bringing out the model she proposes for theorizing the realist novel by showing how brilliantly Moore breaks it.
