- Title
Another Analogue for Middleton’s A Game at Chesse.
- Authors
Doelman, James
- Abstract
The article discusses a possible source for an analogue in the play "A Game at Chesse," by Thomas Middleton. It is argued that the analogue, which likens life to a chess game, may have come from a 1614 sermon that was delivered by Robert Harris, a passage from which is analyzed. It is also noted that a similar metaphor was used by James Cleland in "A Monument of Mortalitie." The author feels that Cleland could have borrowed the idea from Harris, but feels certain that the sermon by Harris influenced Middleton.
