- Abstract
This study examines the relationship between socioeconomic attainment and expressions of American Jewish identification in 1970 and 1990. It challenges the conventional sociological perspective that equates socioeconomic success with ethnic assimilation and examines the importance of structural factors in maintaining ethnic identity. Data are drawn from the 1970 and 1990 National Jewish Population Surveys (NJPS). Multiple regression results indicate that exceptional socioeconomic achievements may be directly linked to the changing nature of Judaism in contemporary America. While high socioeconomic attainment is incompatible with the more private, devotional aspects of Jewish identification, higher levels of education and income are associated with a discernible increase in organizational and communal expressions of Jewish involvement. These findings suggest that the Jews' exceptional socioeconomic achievements bind them together and sustain ethnic continuity.
