- Title
CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH HISTORY IN ELIZABETHAN ROMAN HISTORIES.
- Authors
Dean, Paul
- Abstract
The article informs that the use made by Renaissance historiographers and dramatists, in their discussions of contemporary events, of parallels from earlier periods of history, is too well known to require documentation. Their use of contemporary English history in writing about Roman history has, however, received hardly any notice, and the aim of this note is to give some illustration of this practice. Predictably, the most convenient place for drawing such parallels is the dedication. Perhaps the earliest example is found in author Alexander Barclay's translation of "Sallust's Jugunha" which is dedicated to the Duke of Norfolk.
