- Title
Male Social Workers in Child and Family Welfare: New Directions for Research.
- Authors
Gillingham, Philip
- Abstract
The article discusses how male social workers cope with working in a traditionally female profession. Men may tend to emphasize the managerial and statutory "caring about" people end of the profession, relegating women to the more personal "caring for" arena, and thereby devaluing their work. Male motivation for choosing social work is often called into question, and suspicion of sexual abuse by both heterosexual and homosexual male social workers is not uncommon. There is another school of thought that men add a valuable perspective to social work, especially for children who may not have a stable male presence in their lives. The article suggests reasons for the small amount of research into this area of social work and emphasizes the need for more.
