- Abstract
To show that Lanah met none of Blackstone's standards, the defense called upon none other than Mother Carey who testified that, far from rejecting Bedlow, Lanah had hoped to continue her liaison with him and, when thwarted, sought revenge. It's uncertain whether Lanah or Callanan decided to charge Henry Bedlow with rape, but Lanah could not have acted without Callanan's support because he alone had the means to hire lawyers. For example: On the morning after the rape, when Henry Bedlow quickly left Mother Carey's brothel and told Lanah to do the same, she did not rush home. John Callanan prowled the darkening streets with a neighbor, Samuel Hone, who had spotted Henry Bedlow bringing Lanah back home several days earlier and had warned her that he was not "lawyer Smith" but a notorious rake.
