- Abstract
Objective: In this study, it was planned to investigate the reasons for statin withdrawal and related cardiovascular events in patients who needed to use statins due to stable coronary artery disease. Material and Method: Stable coronary artery disease patients admitted to 4 different cardiology outpatient clinics were included in this cross-sectional and multicenter study. Demographic characteristics were recorded and patients were divided into two groups according to whether they used statins or not. The clinical features and laboratory findings were compared between the still statin-using and discontinued groups. The reasons why patients discontinued their statins were examined and the groups were evaluated for the development of cardiovascular events (angina pectoris, revascularization, acute myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation and cerebrovascular accident). Results: The mean age of 1108 patients included in the study was 64 (56-70). Both groups were similar in terms of risk factors and cardiovascular diseases, but a history of coronary artery bypass surgery was higher in those who discontinued statins (30.7% (n=155) vs 22.2% (n=134), p=0.002), and a history of hyperlipidemia was higher in statin users (%64.3 (n=388) vs 55.6% (n=281), p=0.004). Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein were higher in statin quitters (p<0.001). The number of patients who discontinued statin was 505 (45.6%), while 603 (54.4%) patients continued to use statin. The number of patients whose statin was discontinued by the physician was 214 (42.4%). The development of cardiovascular events was statistically higher in patients who discontinued statin (all values p<0.001). Conclusion: It was observed that the rate of statin withdrawal was quite high in patients who needed to use statins due to stable coronary artery disease. The development of cardiovascular events was significantly higher in those who discontinued the statin. In this respect, it is necessary to produce more permanent solutions in terms of statin use and necessity in our country.
