- Abstract
Molecular modeling was employed to evaluate the theoretical adsorption process during the mixing of additives and during the formation of cross-links in natural rubber (NR) compositions. The idea was to follow the changes caused when vegetable oils, simulated by their major components, replace stearic acid (C18) as activator. The theoretical results corroborate the experimental data of previous studies and demonstrate that unsaturated C18 molecules present an adsorption mechanism with greater chemical character. This fact, together with other theoretical parameters found, makes it impossible to perform at the same level as C18. Coconut oil, simulated by the fatty acid molecule C12, vulcanizes natural rubber, but not with the same quality as C18. Probably, the theoretical characteristics of the adsorption process and some inherent parameters of the molecule, such as hardness and electrophilicity, are the factors responsible for the formation of a lower density cross-link network.
