- Abstract
This article is a contribution to the continuous debate about public service institutions and the redefinition of public service broadcasting in the digital age. By way looking outside of Western Europe and the United States, we identify the Catholic Church in Venezuela as provider of public service content. The Roman Catholic Church in Venezuela owns a vast broadcast network with eleven radio stations, plus twenty affiliated stations. It is furthermore in possession of the television station Nino Cantores del Zulia. While state institutions have been characterised as unstable actors, the Catholic Church has delivered a reliable service in turbulent times. Radio networks such as „Fe y Alegría" have also played a major role in providing educational content on a nation-wide scale. Measured against Western standards such as universality, impartiality and diversity, our data shows that the stations of „Fe y Alegría" and those associated with the network are offering a first-rate service to the Venezuelan public.
